Thank you for supporting the Madison bond election! The reconstruction of Madison Simis is one of the projects that will be funded from the bond funds. Planning for this project is currently under way and will include replacement of all school buildings except the new cafeteria.

Orcutt|Winslow, the architecture firm that designed the new cafeteria, has been selected to design the new buildings for the reconstruction project. McCarthy Building Companies has been selected as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) for this project.

It is anticipated that the rebuild will be completed in two phases with groundbreaking for the first phase in June 2015. This phase will consist of constructing classrooms on a section of the campus that does not currently have any buildings, such as the fields. Constructing new classrooms where no buildings currently exist will eliminate the need for portables as temporary classrooms during construction. The first phase will be complete by winter break, allowing students to utilize the classrooms when they return in January. The second phase will begin in January 2016 with demolition of the old classrooms now vacated by the students utilizing the new classroom building. Construction on the second phase will be complete by August 2016 for the start of school.

A community forum for neighbors and parents was held on January 14 to gather input on what is important to the community in regards to the reconstruction of Simis. Additional input was solicited through comment cards available at the school and a submission system on the Simis web site. Orcutt|Winslow participated in the forum and all input has been provided to them for use as design considerations.

A building committee, comprised of neighbors, parents, and staff, has been assembled to provide information that will help guide the design of the new campus. This committee met four times, allowing the architects to capture information that will guide building design, building structure type (1-story, 2-story, or combo), and new campus layout. Madison Staff and Orcutt|Winslow also met with community groups to capture their input. Concept images for the new campus were shared at the Madison Governing Board Meetings on April 7 and May 5 and at a community forum on May 20. The Madison Governing Board approved the design at the May 5 Governing Board Meeting and the construction contract at the May 26 meeting.

Groundbreaking Ceremony – 9/30/2015simis-groundbreaking

On Sept. 30, 2015, the Simis community celebrated the formal groundbreaking
for the reconstruction of Madison Simis Elementary School. While construction has been underway for some time, this was an opportunity for students and community leaders to gather and celebrate the in-progress project, which is being paid for through voter-approved bond funds. Students are expected to move into the new facilities in January 2016; construction on the site will continue through August 2016.
