    Madison Parents and Families,

    As we approach the return to hybrid learning on Monday, February 22, I wish to take this opportunity to provide information, to give thanks and to ask for unity.

    The District’s Mitigation Plan, along with school site-specific protocols, have been revised to align with the most current CDC guidelines. You can find those plans here.

    While much of the guidance remains unchanged, it is important that everyone familiarizes themselves with each aspect of the Plan. If we are to minimize the number of classrooms and schools needing to quarantine, it is vital that mitigation protocols are followed.

    I wish to thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to maneuver through this pandemic. I know that returning to virtual learning did not sit well with some of our families while doing so was supported by others. It is an issue that has caused division within the Madison community. My hope is that we can move forward from this situation with the understanding that what we all want is the best for everyone’s child, regardless of our position. 

    Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote, “Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.”

    Because we love our children, may we put aside any ill-will or hateful feelings and look forward to a better day. May we be confident that while there were, are and will be disagreements, we can come back unified as one community and one school district that looks “…outward together in the same direction.” A direction of hope for each child’s success. A direction of understanding, forgiveness, empathy, kindness and compassion. If we each do that, together, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish. Because together, we are Madison!

  • 2/10/2021 - Return to Hybrid Learning February 22, 2021

    Good afternoon Madison Families,

    Hybrid learning will resume on Monday, February 22. In order to prepare, there will be no school on Friday, February 19. This employee workday will allow staff to arrange classrooms for in-person learners, prepare common areas for lunch and other class activities, and deep clean campuses, all in accordance with the District’s Mitigation Plan.

    Additionally, in order to support at-home online learners, schools will dismiss one hour earlier on the already scheduled TCT Wednesdays (Elementary 12:00, MTA 12:30, Middle 1:10) with MAC provided for current MAC participants at no extra cost. Teachers will offer office hours and support for online students. Non-TCT Wednesdays will be on the normal, full-day schedule.

    Madison will continue to follow the District’s Mitigation Plan to promote safe learning environments. Madison will also be the first district in Arizona to participate in COVID-19 Batch Testing. By proactively testing students and staff, the District will be able to identify positive cases and quickly take action. In the coming days, more information will be provided and consent forms for students to self-administer their test will be available for parents and families.

    At last night’s Governing Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Baca asked staff and families to voluntarily self-quarantine as much as possible prior to February 22 in order to do all that we can to safely return and remain in hybrid learning with limited disruption. In the coming days, we will update the District and each school’s mitigation plans, in accordance with any new CDC Guidelines, to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on campus. We ask the entire Madison community to re-familiarize themselves with the safety protocols that have been established.

  • 2/1/2021-At-Home Online Learning Sign Up Reminder

    Good afternoon Madison Families,

    This is a friendly reminder that the deadline to sign up for at-home online learning is this Sunday, February 7. Families will need to decide if their student(s) will attend in-person instruction or learn online at home from February 22, 2021 through the end of the school year. Visit www.madisonaz.org/onlinelearningsignup to access the at-home online learning form. Please only complete this form if your child will attend school online at-home through the end of the school year.

    We understand that some families might want to make a change to the learning model they selected in January. Please contact your child’s school if you would like to remove your student from the at-home online learning list. www.madisonaz.org/contact

    Choosing a learning model for your student can be a challenging decision. The CDC has created a back to in-person learning checklist to help families during this transition. Additionally, the CDC provides resources and information for families as students prepare to return to the classroom.

  • 1/27/2021 - Information on Returning to Hybrid Learning

    Hello Madison Families,

    Metrics:

    Last night, the Governing Board reviewed the City of Phoenix COVID-19 metrics. At this time, Madison will return to hybrid learning on February 22 (as long as the metrics trend downward and all employees have had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated). We will continue to provide updates and inform you of any changes as information becomes available.

    At-Home Online Learning Sign Up:

    As the Governing Board continues to monitor the metrics and as the District prepares for a return to hybrid learning, families will need to decide if their student(s) will attend in-person instruction or learn online at home through the end of the school year. Since the return date to hybrid learning is at the end of third quarter (February 22), schools and administration need to begin preparing for the fourth quarter. If you complete the at-home online sign up form, your child will learn online at-home until the end of the school year. If you have already completed the form and would like to make a change, please contact your child’s school. Please visit madisonaz.org/onlinelearningsignup to access the at-home online learning form. The deadline to sign up for at-home online learning is February 7.

    Due to the number of students planning to attend in-person, many teachers will be teaching both online and in-person students at the same time. Online learning schedules may include independent study or additional screen time. As always, our teachers will be working diligently to accommodate the needs of both in-person and online students.

    Schools will maintain proper physical distancing, when possible. Since more students will be attending in-person, physical distancing may be less than 6 feet during lunch and class time.

  • 1/20/2021 - Metrics for Returning to Hybrid Learning

    Hello Madison Families,

    The Madison Governing Board held a special meeting last night to discuss the status of the data dashboard, metrics, and the recommended learning model. At this time, the recommended learning model is virtual with onsite support.

    The Governing Board also met with Dr. Richard Gerkin, a research associate professor at Arizona State University, to analyze the most current COVID-19 data trends.

    After discussion, the Governing Board decided to set Monday, February 22 as the date to return to hybrid learning as long as there is a downward trend in the metrics and Madison staff have been given the opportunity to be fully vaccinated.

  • 1/13/2021 - Metrics for Returning to Hybrid Learning

    Good afternoon Madison Families,

    Last night, the Governing Board updated the metrics that the District will use to determine when to return to hybrid learning (in-person and at-home learning). The Governing Board approved to continue to use the City of Phoenix data and return to hybrid learning when two benchmarks (e.g., cases, percent positivity and COVID like illness) are in the yellow (moderate category). The Board also decided that one of these yellow categories must be cases per 100,000.

    Madison will be partnering with Dr. Richard Gerkin, a research associate professor at Arizona State University, who has been analyzing COVID-19 data trends. Dr. Gerkin will review the most up-to-date data regarding cases per 100,000 and provide updates to the Governing Board. This allows the Board to use data that are available without the current delay of data released by the health departments; therefore, this could return the District to hybrid much sooner than if the District waited for the health departments to publicly release their data.

    Madison is committed to returning to hybrid learning, but as indicated by the most recent City of Phoenix data, the District is still in the red (substantial category). Madison will continue with at-home online learning until two of the metrics (one being cases per 100,000) are in the yellow (moderate category).

    COVID-19 DATA FOR THE CITY OF PHOENIX

    Released January 7, 2021 (for the week of Dec. 20, 2020)

    • Cases per 100K people: 505.59 (red)
    • Percent positivity: 21.25% (red)
    • Covid-like illness: 12.90% (red)

    Prior week's data (for the week of Dec. 13, 2020)

    • Cases per 100K people: 560.15 (red)
    • Percent positivity: 18.99% (red)
    • Covid-like illness: 12.80% (red)

    The Governing Board will review the metrics at the January 19 meeting to determine if students can return to hybrid learning on January 25. Students will only return to hybrid learning once two metrics (one being cases per 100,000) are in the moderate (yellow) category.

    If you would like your child to continue learning online at home through the third quarter (once students return to hybrid learning) please fill out the At-Home Online Learning sign-up form.   • 12/16/2020 - Important Information Regarding Hybrid Learning

    Madison Families,

    I recognize the stress, hardship and anxiety that we have endured since March. Difficult decisions have needed to be made without unanimous agreement. At a Special Governing Board meeting last night, the Board approved an aspirational date of returning K-8 students to hybrid learning.

    • If the COVID metrics indicate it is safe to do so, K-8 grade students could return to hybrid learning on January 25, 2021 (virtual learning will continue when we return from winter break on January 4, 2021).
    • On January 12, 2021, the Governing Board will meet to look at trend data to discuss and possibly decide on the official metrics that will be used to return K-8 students to hybrid learning.

    I wish to emphasize that January 25 is an aspirational date and may be pushed back to a later date if the trend data continue to indicate substantial community spread of the virus. After the winter break, the Governing Board will meet as often as necessary to monitor the metrics.

    Once we return to hybrid learning, we will need to make sure we can continue to safely operate our schools and limit returning individual schools to virtual learning as a result of multiple COVID cases. Each school will be meeting with their site teams of staff and parents for planning purposes to assist with this endeavor. Many parents have asked what they can do to make sure schools operate safely. Here is what we need.

    By the time we return to hybrid learning, we need between 20-30 new substitutes. If you are able to obtain your substitute certificate, please consider applying in Madison.     While school districts have different learning models, the one thing every school district has in common is that people are disappointed, disheartened and angry; some of these people are hostile and overtly/passively aggressive toward members of the Board, administration and/or teachers. Whether districts have in-person, hybrid or virtual learning models, families and staff are either upset or pleased.

    While the vast majority of those in Madison have been able to communicate their disagreements in a dignified and respectful manner, there are some who choose to use harsh and hateful words via social media and through direct communication. As a Madison community, we are better than that. We can agree to disagree without being disagreeable and without being hateful. We must applaud the efforts of our teachers for their hard work and dedication to every child.

    As we celebrate the holidays, let us keep in mind the spirit of the season. Let us find time to reconcile, offer and accept forgiveness, and choose to be civil when we disagree. My hope is that we can heal from this experience and be a stronger community as a result. I continue to believe in the goodness that resides in the hearts of our Madison family.

    Parents/guardians and/or children 18 and younger may pick up free meal bundles, which include breakfast, lunch, supper, and snack at the times listed below.  On Fridays, free meal bundles will also be given for Saturday and Sunday.  All children 18 and younger qualify for this free program, regardless of eligibility! We encourage all on site and virtual learners to utilize this free program. Children do not have to be enrolled in a Madison School in order to receive a free meal.

  • 11/20/2020 - Online Learning Schedule Information

    Dear Parents,

    We understand the challenges that online learning presents to both students and teachers, and are continually making improvements to provide for the academic, social, and emotional needs of your child. Beginning Monday, November 30, the instructional day for all students will follow the TCT Early Release school hours. This will allow for reduced screen time for students, time for students to complete assignments, and teacher office hours where teachers will be available for you or your child. The office hours will be available each school day with the exception of Wednesdays, which will continue to be used for the Teacher Collaboration Time (TCT). Office hours may include 1:1 or small group time with students. Other school personnel will be available for you or your child during these office hours, such as the social worker or counselor.

    • Elementary Schools: 7:45 a.m.–1:00 p.m. with teacher office hours (M, T, Th, F) through 2:45 p.m.
    • Middle Schools: 8:30 a.m.–2:10 p.m. with teacher office hours (M, T, Th, F) through 3:40 p.m.
    • Madison Traditional Academy: 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m. with teacher office hours (M, T, Th, F) through 3:00 p.m.

    Additionally, teachers will focus lessons and assignments on foundational and essential learning objectives. As educators, our teachers recognize that there are multiple possibilities for completing assignments that allow the student to meet the lesson goals. While you may not always see a traditional worksheet or essay, or while your child may not have the same assignment as a classmate, be assured that teachers are monitoring your child’s progress. The rigor of the learning is the level of complexity of the work being assigned, not the quantity of work.

    Teachers continue to receive professional development, instructional coaching, and resources for online learning. The models in which they have received training include both synchronous (live instruction) and asynchronous (independent work) time for the students, including a 50/50 model that reduces the synchronous screen time by 50%. The synchronous, interactive time between the teacher and the students may include whole group lessons and activities, small group lessons and activities, or 1:1 time with the teacher. Students will follow the daily schedule established by the school and the teacher. Teachers will continue to assess your child’s learning progress, including the administration of the MAP assessment (Measures of Academic Progress), which will allow us to plan for and address learning gaps.

    This flexibility with the learning day and with assignments helps to reduce synchronous screen time. However, with many of our electronic resources, your child may still need screen time to complete assignments. Please work with your child’s teacher if you feel the amount of screen time cannot be managed.
