7/8/2020 - School Opening Update

Posted by Madison Communications on 7/8/2020

Madison Parents and Families,

I wish to provide you a brief update as to the status of schools opening in August.

In compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order to delay the physical opening of schools until August 17, we will begin online learning on August 11. The first four days of school (8/11- 8/14) will be on a half day schedule in order to provide all teachers time during the second part of the day to develop and improve the skills and tools necessary to provide a robust online experience. We must do this in the event we have to provide online learning beyond August 17. We learned much when we closed school last year and we are doing everything we can to improve the online learning experience.

The first four days for students will be devoted, but not limited, to social/emotional well-being, pre-assessment of academic skills and deployment of Chromebooks in conjunction with having all of the online tools needed to have an improved online teaching and learning experience. It will also give the District time to provide internet-filtered Chromebooks to families in need, allow everyone to familiarize themselves with the online platform that will be used (Schoology) and help families choosing to use their own devices work through any technology issues accessing the District’s online learning systems.

This is where we are currently. The day to physically reopen our schools may be delayed further, depending where Arizona is regarding COVID-19. Thus, what you have read above could be altered. If we must continue online, the District wants to make sure that the online teaching is of the highest standard and equitably provided across schools. That is why we are devoting 4 half days for teacher professional learning and time for families to have all the tools to limit any technological interruptions.

As a reminder, the deadline to enroll in MADISON VIRTUAL ACADEMY (MVA) is tomorrow, July 9. I wish to thank the families who have already enrolled their children for the first quarter of MVA. If you have questions or need additional information, please go to our website: https://madisonaz.org/madisonvirtualacademyfaq/ or email MVA@madisoned.org.

On behalf of our Governing Board, thank you for your continued kindness, support and understanding. I am proud to be a member of the Madison family!

Sincerely,
Kenneth R. Baca, Ed.D.
